A-Z of web tools

There are so many fantastic free resources out there on the web, but it can be difficult to identify the useful ones. Below I have listed some web tools that I think are useful. If you know of any other useful tools, please let me know.

  • ClassConnect allows web-based classes to be set up. In these classes, you engage students with interactive lectures, organize your digital content in one place and share content with colleagues and students.
  • CleanPrint is a plugin that can be added to Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari and allows webpages to be formatted and edited.
  • Coursesites is a web-based application provided by Blackboard. It allows for the creation of up to 5 free online courses and has the same functionality and look-and-feel as the enterprise-level BB Learn LMS.
  • Diigo is a social bookmarking tool that allows you collect and organize almost any form of data, access this data anywhere and share it easily.
  • Edmodo describes itself as a micro-blogging service (like Twitter) for educators. But it’s much more than that. You can use it to deliver online lessons, share information, set and collect online assignments and much more.
  • Engrade is a social learning platform. It contains a free set of web-based tools for educators allowing them to manage their classes online while providing parents and students with 24/7 real-time online class information. It’s private, secure, truly free, and easy to use.
  • Enter the Group allows you and your colleagues/students to work together in groups. It provides instant messaging, private pages, group polls and calenders, shared file spaces, shared tasks and to-do lists, email and blogs.
  • Facebook is a social networking tool that allows you to connect and share with people.
  • FlipSnack is a tool that converts PDF files into Flash flip books, which can then be embedded into your blogs, websites, etc.
  • Foliospaces is a fully featured electronic portfolio, weblog, resume builder and social networking system, connecting users and creating online communities.
  • Google Apps is a service from Google for using custom domain names with several Google products. It features several Web applications with similar functionality to traditional office suites, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites.
  • JayCut is an online video editor. It’s easy-to-use interface allow videos to be edited and created very quickly and then shared on the web.
  • LearnBoost advertises itself as on online gradebook. You can set up classes, add lesson plans and assignments, take attendance and integrate it with Goolge Apps.
  • Myebook allows you create, publish, share and sell digital magazines, eBooks and more.
  • Open Atrium is a platform for collaboration, allowing a group of people to learn/work together using blogs, notebooks (a form of wiki), case trackers and calendars. It’s built on top of the drupal platform so needs to be stored on your own server.
  • Quizlet is a website with over 3 million free sets of flashcards covering every possible subject. It also allows quizzes and games to be automatically generated based on the flashcard wordlists.
  • QuizRevolution allows multiple choice quizzes to be generated very easily. Images, text and video can also be embedded in the quiz questions and the quiz can be easily embedded in a blog or website.
  • Screenr allows you to make short screencasts that can be tweeted, posted on youtube or embedded in your blogs and websites.
  • SimpleBooklet is an online flipbook creation tool. It can be used to create a variety of different flipbooks which can then be shared by email, embedded in blogs and websites and posted across social networks.
  • Sumo Paint is an online image editor that can do a lot of what Photoshop does. You can also create an account into which to upload and save your images.
  • TokBox is a web application that allows users to make multi-party video chat calls over the Internet without a download.
  • Tubechop allows you to “chop” longer videos on the web. The resultant short video can be embedded in blogs and websites or sent as a link.
  • Wiggio allows you and your colleagues/students to work together in groups. It provides instant messaging, private pages, group polls and calenders, shared file spaces, shared tasks and to-do lists and email.
  • WordPress is an open source Content Management System (CMS), often used for publishing blogs.
  • Yudu is a tool that allows users to self publish and access digital magazines, eBooks and more.
